There are many opinions on the origins of Tapas, from King Alfonso X ‘The Wise, who was prescribed a large quantity of wine whilst recovering from an illness and ate small portions of food to diminish the effects of alcohol to bar keepers began covering customers’ drinks with a slice of bread, ham or cheese to stop flies and dust from entering the drink.
Tapas are bascially a small plate of food served with a drink, however so many establishments are taking Tapas to a new level. In some towns, like San Sebastián and Cartegena, tapas are known as pintxos, and the have taken the food to a new level.
Whatever the origin, no-one can take away that there is nothing better than a glass of wine accompanied by a Tapas, below are some examples, next time you are in Spain, ask for a Tapas with your drink and enjoy.
