Heating your home in Spain

Winter does indeed arrive in Spain, though year to year the date when we decide its necessary to start to turn on our heating varies, 2022 has seen a long extension to Summer, with daytime temperatures still hitting 20+ degrees, though as the nights get a little cooler, most properties will have one of the systems below to heat their homes

Estufas

These are mobile gas fires that use "Butano", Butane, are very popular, they are fired by a Bottle of Gas (12KG) which you can purchase from Petrols Stations or some hardware stores. If you want them delivered then you need a contract with either Repsol or Cepsa.

Pellet Burners

The Pellet burner market is now thriving with more and more people having them installed. There are a large number of suppliers in the area, with the price of a bag of pellets (5KG) costing around 6-8€ depending on the quality and make of pellets

Solar Water Heaters

Given the number of hours of sunshine that Spain has then it is not surprising that the number of Solar water heaters is increasing, every new build property has to have one installed as a legal requirement. Once installed they are a cheap way of generating hot water.

HeatPumps

Even with the price of Electricity, HeatPumps, are another way to take advantage of the warmer climate in Spain, there are a large number of suppliers who are available to install the latest models

Central Heating (Natural Gas and Propane)

Many larger villas have older heating systems that use radiators throughout the property which use large gas bottles or Natural gas. Often outside properties you will see Gas Bottle Casitas (Sheds) which house up to 12 large bottles or even an independent Gas storage container (1000L).

Air-Conditioning

For a lot of people who only visit their Holiday homes, they use Hot-Cold Air-Conditing, though with the increase in the price of Electricity many are choosing other solutions

Wood Burners

The old fashioned wood burning stoves are still very popular and lots of people still love the look of a wood burning stove and purchase each year a metric tonne of wood (Oliver, Orange etc) to keep them toasty all through the winter.

Whatever your choice of heating the one thing you will notice is that on the Costa Blanca we tend to have our heating on for only a few months, which means that living in Spain can offer savings on your living costs, not least if you opt for a Solar solution the cost is negligible, which when added to the quality of living in a warmer climate means you can enjoy a New Life in Spain for less than you think
